Summer 2011 #2 First Field Trip to Warwick Castle

We head off for Warwick Castle and Stratford on the wonderful British rail system on a 9-day Britrail pass that is worth more than these students can imagine. That's 9 separate days of travel anywhere in Great Britain.

Oh, yea, Warwick Castle.

My class, all eight of 'em. I really like this group. I'm happy to lead them around some great stuff in England.

The castle had a millwheel to grind grains long ago. In the late 1800s they converted it to make electricity. That lasted until the 1940s.

Me in the courtyard. The mound behind me is the early fort that was here around 1089 A. D.

From the top of the mound you can see down across the surrounding land with a 60 foot trebuchet or seige machine that they demonstrate by having it throw a huge stone for an enormous distance.

Turn back to the courtyard, and here is what you get.

This is the part of the castle that contains the stuff that you will see next.

The Great Hall, this one full of armor and other splendor.

A horse disguised as a tank.

On the left in the previous picture you see a sideboard from 1851 time of the Great Exhibition. This is a detail of the amazing carving on this piece of furniture.

Henry VII and the wives.

18th Century picture in the dining room. Is this a picture frame or what?

There's a section of the castle that is set up as an 1898 royal weekend party. Here is a young Winston Churchill arriving with all his luggage.

Some of the ladies get ready for the evening.

Nice chandelier.

Nice bed.

A Victorian Period bed.

The carving is pretty impressive.

The Peacock Garden: A real one.

The topiary kind.

Schoolkids in the garden.
